Whilst ELT qualifications aren't essential in order to secure a job teaching English abroad they make the task considerably easier. Applicants armed with a recognised TEFL certificate or similar qualification will have a wider range of positions open to them. English schools in many countries are very unlikely to offer a job to an individual who has neither experience or a suitable TEFL qualification.
